ARTISTS APPRECIATING ART
In this free program, La Jolla Country Day students learn about the various facets of the Southern California art scene. We visit a wide range of art spaces such as museums, artist studios, and galleries to further our understanding and appreciation of contemporary art. During these visits we interact with artists, gallerists, art collectors, and curators that provide insight on a variety of forms of artwork. " It is my hope to provide students the opportunity to observe art in the contexts in which it exists in our world, and in the process widen their understanding of the definition of art. "I think that having an art appreciation class is very important, especially as a high schooler that is interested in art. Being able to go to art galleries and experiencing the art in real life, is something so different than looking at art on a screen or in a book. I feel like I have a newfound connection with the artist after looking and reading about their work that is displayed in a museum. Escaping life for a while and taking time out of your day to go to a gallery, is unheard of at a regular high school, and is something that I really appreciate about mine. "

"Giving people, and young people in particular, the chance to experience a wide range of creative mediums is something that is truly necessary in society. For me personally, being able to see pieces in person created a stronger connection between myself and the art world, transforming art into something tangible and real. After all, seeing art in front of you feels different than seeing it in a textbook. In real life, your eyes can trace brushstrokes and fingerprints, or explore the bumps of tiny mountains of paint, which gives you the chance to transcend idolization and begin to see the artists as people. And when you see artists as people, you realize that you have the potential to shape the world, just as they have."

"Art classes and art appreciation field trips have helped me as an artist. The classes Josh provides allow me to learn and grow as an artist and the art appreciation field trips give me inspiration. It's also really nice to be surrounded by art, artists and artistic vibes. I've definitely grown as an artist while partaking in these things, I've learned about different mediums, techniques and styles of art by both witnessing and doing them."
